
The Member States of the European Union will work together on joint gas purchases. The Joint Procurement Platform will also be open to the Eastern Partnership countries, including Ukraine.
This is stated in the conclusions adopted following the meeting of the European Council held on 24-25 March in Brussels. Such an instruction to the member states and the European Commission was issued in order to get rid of the dependence of gas supplies on Russia, Interfax-Ukraine reports .
The conclusions say that the European Council considered the EU’s readiness for the near future and instructed the Council to “examine the Commission’s proposals on EU gas storage policy, taking due account of the interests of Member States with significant storage capacity, in order to ensure fair balance. “
“The replenishment of gas storage facilities throughout the Union must begin as soon as possible, taking full account of national preparedness measures. In the run-up to next winter, Member States and the Commission must “Making the best use of the collective political and market weight of the European Union and its Member States to lower negotiating prices. The Common Procurement Platform will also be open to the Western Balkans and the three associated Eastern Partners,” the statement said.
It is also planned to complete and improve gas and electricity connections throughout the European Union, including full synchronization of electricity networks to ensure security of supply for all Member States.
