Residents of European Union member states have been told to stock up on food and essential supplies in case of war or other major emergency.
The corresponding recommendation is included in a report on civil and military preparedness for Europe, which was written by the adviser to the President of the European Commission and former President of Finland Sauli Niinistö, Newsweek reports .
As noted, the EU was not prepared for the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian war against Ukraine, and therefore it was decided to move “from reaction to proactive preparedness.” In this regard, households were advised to be ready for self-sufficiency for at least 72 hours in the event of an emergency.
The document recommended that member states “provide their citizens with guidance on stockpiling, evacuation and access to emergency services.” This includes non-perishable food, water, medicine, flashlights, batteries and a portable radio. The main threat is identified as possible Russian aggression.
“We do not have a clear plan for what the EU would do in the event of armed aggression against a Member State. The threat of war that Russia poses to European security makes us view this as an important element of our preparedness, without undermining our work to prepare for other serious threats,” the report says.
According to Niinistö, empowering citizens should be at the core of a comprehensive preparedness strategy. In particular, the EU should raise awareness and encourage self-reliance strategies among the population. The politician also recommended increasing the EU budget by 20% to strengthen security and crisis response. Among other things, it is indicated that there should be an increase in intelligence sharing between member states.

Those are futile measures. Clearly, if Ukraine loses, then it’s game over for the continent, unless some are willing to throw nukes around. I don’t see that happening.

In 1956, the UK still spent 8% of GDP on defence. As a consequence, we had the world’s third most powerful military. The British Army on The Rhine alone was pretty formidable : 60,000 combat troops, state of the art (for the time) tanks and tactical nukes. It evolved from being an army of occupation to a defensive force : purely as a bulwark against the WP forces.
In the 1960’s, shit socialist govts slashed defence to a fraction. Maggie Thatch tried to reverse that with some limited success, but then Blair brought in millions of cradle-to-grave clients of the socialist welfare state which fucked us over so badly that it’s irreversible.
Starmer may turn out to be worse than Blair.
All European countries with a serious professional military need to step up to at least 5% of GDP. Poland; aware of the danger, is already on 3.5%, but they are scaling back dramatically on Ukraine support because of historical grievances.
Clearly, we have all the wrong people in all the wrong places. Where is the light at the end of the tunnel?
