The European Commission has finally approved the provision of 6.1 billion euros in funding to Ukraine for the production of drones and the purchase of PAC-3 interceptor missiles. As an UNIAN correspondent reports, EU Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius said this at a briefing after the first meeting of the board of the EU-Ukraine Drone Alliance.
In particular, the European Commissioner reported news about decisions made within the framework of a loan to support Ukraine totaling 90 billion euros.
“Today, the European Commission also officially approved the provision of 6.1 billion euros for drones and missiles for Ukraine’s air defense from the loan in support of Ukraine. This is indeed, again, a very important step forward. We have worked hard with the Member States and Ukraine to achieve this goal,” Kubilius emphasized.
As the European Commissioner explained, this decision officially allows Ukraine to purchase PAC-3 interceptor missiles for Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems.
According to him, the corresponding financing from the loan in support of Ukraine provides for five exceptions to the implementation of procurement. Thus, three of them concern investments in the production of Ukrainian drones and components, the cost of which exceeds the threshold values, and two of them concern the purchase of American-made equipment, in particular PAC-3 missiles, including through the PURL mechanism in joint coordination with NATO.
“And thanks to today’s decision, we managed to achieve such a result that all 28.3 billion euros that were allocated for this year to finance defense from the loan in support of Ukraine are now agreed,” the European Commissioner emphasized.
At the same time, the European Commission is currently processing a request for approval to provide €4.7 billion in requests.
“This is the next stage after the 8.3 billion that have already been paid out. So, the payments continue,” Kubilius howled.
