Against the backdrop of Russian missile strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, the EU is supporting a project to lay an energy cable in the Black Sea.

As stated in the message on the EU website , such a statement was made by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in Bucharest during the signing of the framework Memorandum of Understanding on the project.

Romania, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Hungary are involved in the project. As they say in the message, the project will allow to strengthen the security of the entire region, including Ukraine, as well as to accelerate the restoration of the energy infrastructure of Ukraine, destroyed during the Russian aggression, the EU is convinced.

“This agreement will bring the EU closer to our partners in the South Caucasus region and help both of our regions achieve a “clean” energy connection… The Black Sea Electric Cable will help supply electricity to our neighbors – to Moldova and the countries of the Western Balkans and, of course, to Ukraine, – it will help start the restoration of the energy system of Ukraine and the reconstruction of the entire country,” Ursula von der Leyen stressed.

She noted that the European Commission is waiting for the completion of studies that have already begun to evaluate this project and is ready to support the project financially, since it meets the common interests of the EU, neighboring countries and the entire region.
