One of the components of future support for Ukraine will be excess profits from frozen Russian assets.
The European Union is not going to stop supporting Ukraine, regardless of how the results of the US presidential elections will affect the future. As reported by a UNIAN correspondent, this was told to journalists by the Chairperson of the EU Political and Security Committee Delphine Pronk, who arrived in Kiev on a visit at the head of a delegation of ambassadors from 27 EU member states.
In particular, she was asked two questions. First, whether the European Union is going to increase military support for Ukraine through the European Peace Fund if the newly elected US President Donald Trump decides to stop helping Ukraine and shifts the entire burden of responsibility for supporting Ukraine onto the EU. And second, how is the EU going to overcome Hungary’s constant blocking of assistance to Ukraine.
“I will want to see how the EU supports and will continue to support also with the super profits from frozen Russian assets. We have unblocked 1.4 billion euros, which are being channeled as direct investment into your defense capabilities and were allocated in August. Of course, I will not preempt the decisions of the 27 states. These are 27 states that decide in unity on our common foreign, security and defense policy. But if you look at what we have done in the past, I have no reason to believe that we will not support you by any means possible and as soon as we can,” Pronk emphasized.
She noted separately that the EU recognizes that the Americans made their choice in democratic elections. And now EU leaders and heads of state have congratulated Trump on his re-election as president.
“We are ready to work with any partner, and this is our constant signal that we are also ready to support Ukraine,” Pronk said.
At the same time, she said, actions speak louder than words, as the EU has been on Ukraine’s side since the start of Russia’s unprovoked and full-scale aggressive war against Ukraine. Pronk added:
“Our leaders and EU heads of state will also be joining forces this week and I am fairly confident that they will reiterate the message of support that we are on your side.”
She also said that her delegation came to Kyiv to assure the EU of unwavering support.
Pronk noted that thanks to the EU Military Assistance Mission (EUMAM), almost 63,000 Ukrainian soldiers have already been trained in EU countries. She assured that the EU is ready to do more to train Ukrainian troops.
As is known, the EU Political and Security Committee makes decisions on military support within the framework of the European Peace Facility.
