The difference between “guarantees” and “assurances”

This one is Kyiv and was designed to carry a nuclear warhead that would have made moscow think twice before attacking Ukraine

In 1991 when Ukraine gained its independence,
there were 176 of these here,
plus another 1900 nuclear warheads,
3rd largest stockpile in the WORLD

So what happened?

Almost exact 30 years ago, Ukraine gave all these up in the name of nuclear non-proliferation and peace, in exchange for what should have been defense “guarantees” from the US
under the Budapest Memorandum

But due to conflict in negotiations, and under last minute pressure from the US, the young nation instead settled for “assurances”

That one word has made the difference,
between US being bound to defend Ukraine under international law (much like its NATO allies), and merely being subject to consideration to intervene

As an attorney I spent the better part of two decades fighting over every word and comma, so I understand the difference,

but in this case I can’t help but feel an enormous amount of injustice here.

Well yes,
we depend on donations and we need to be grateful that’s why we Still Survived – that’s according to some commentators from abroad,

but if we had less selected idiots in politics (by our national will), we would not need to depend on anyone, nor ask for donations, some of our partners remind us often that we should be grateful for donations, like they hold 0 obligations or simply forgot they do owe us a big time 🕰️ 🤔

Now we pay with our lives including innocent lives, now that’s one solid lesson to not forget the next 1000 years, because the previous 1000 we forgot,
of course after another lesson “never trust ruzzians”, or “ruzzian language is the weapon of assimilation, it means genocide of other nations” but not many people remember this 🤔, and now we all pay by lives and future

dear Linkedin, there is no hate in this comment, be sure to avoid attacs from bots and trolls 🧌

Andriy, what are you talking about… American elites treated Ukrainians at the beginning of 1990s as indigenous ppl, whose fate belong to Muscoky — and the indigenous ppl have no right to nukes.
Americans twisted Ukraine’s arms in order to please russia. Bush and Clinton administrations disarmed Ukraine and neither Kravchuk nor Kuchma were able to change it.

and, watching American reluctance to arm us to teeth in order to win this war, I can tell you that their elites are STILL seeing us as indigenous.

  1. The Budapest Memorandum has been a death sentence to any future nuclear disarmament. No nation will be so insane to give up nukes for a piece of worthless paper, even if the United States signs it. We signed the BM, and we see what worth our signature was. The outcome is terrible.
