The largest Russian manufacturer of trucks, KamAZ, is switching some of its divisions to a four-day work schedule starting August 1.
The company explains the move by the “critical collapse” of the market for equipment with a lifting capacity of over 14 tons, where sales dropped by almost 60% in the first half of the year, The Moscow Times reports .
The company promises that only workshops without full load will be subject to capacity reduction, while social guarantees for employees will be maintained. KamAZ names two main factors of the crisis:
- Import suppliers have imported an “excessive” volume of vehicles, and according to the plant’s estimate, more than 30,000 unsold trucks have accumulated in warehouses, which are undermining prices.
- The high key rate of the Bank of Russia and limited access to loans and leasing have cooled demand: more than 10 thousand almost new cars are already “hanging” in the warehouses of leasing companies, being sold below the market price.
“The lack of growth prospects and the pressure of excess imported equipment are forcing us to take an unpopular but necessary step,” the plant said in a statement, which is simultaneously negotiating with corporate clients about additional purchases.
This is the third major Russian auto giant in a week to announce a reduction in working hours. A day earlier, GAZ confirmed the transition to a four-day workweek until at least the end of August, complaining about a 40% drop in sales in the medium-tonnage segment of the car market and a 60% drop in demand for buses.
We also recall that on July 22, AvtoVAZ announced a similar decision, predicting a 25% decline in the Russian passenger car market to 1.1 million units.
According to the Russian agency “Avtostat”, in total, 601.8 thousand vehicles (cars, trucks and buses) were sold in Russia in January-June 2025, which is 28% less than last year. Analysts of the European Business Association expect that the trend will continue and by the end of the year the drop will be about a quarter of last year’s volumes.
It was previously reported that passenger car production in Russia accelerated its decline in June this year, falling by 28.2%.
