The Russian market is recording a sharp decline in the production of building materials amid problems in construction.

Bricks are sinking the most, with production in 2025 likely to decline by 7.3% year-on-year, or to 1.81 billion conventional pieces, The Moscow Times reports , citing Russian media.

According to estimates by the Russian consulting company Neo, by 2030 brick production will fall by 43.2% from the 2025 level – to 1.02 billion units.

Another Russian consulting company, SMPRO, also predicts that the production of ceramic and silicate bricks in the Russian Federation will fall by 7.3% in 2025, the output of reinforced concrete products will decrease by 16.7%, and ready-mixed concrete by 3.7%.

The decline also affected cement, roofing and ceramic materials, said Alexander Ruchyov, president of the Russian group of companies Osnova.

The key factor is the slowdown in construction activity, Neo experts point out. According to the portal “Nash.dom.rf”, in January-August the commissioning of individual housing in the Russian Federation decreased by 5% year-on-year – to 47.3 million sq. m, multi-apartment housing – by 6%, to 20.3 million sq. m.

At the same time, prices continue to rise: in 2025, the price of bricks increased by an average of 11.2% – to 11.9 thousand rubles per 1 thousand conventional pieces, and since 2020 – by 95.1%. Because of this, developers are switching to alternative solutions – sandwich panels, frame structures, noted Yana Lebedynska, a partner in the Engineering practice at Neo.

It was previously reported that German building materials manufacturer Knauf was unable to sell its business in Russia . Putin’s friends had previously wanted to buy it, but the company said the potential buyer broke off negotiations.
