Rosstat has stopped publishing a number of important macroeconomic indicators.
In its July bulletin, Rosstat for the first time did not disclose real (inflation-adjusted) data on retail and wholesale turnover for June and the first half of the year, The Moscow Times reports .
Only nominal figures of retail turnover growth of 12.2% year-on-year have been published, while in real terms (taking into account inflation), the increase would have been only 2-3%, according to calculations by Russian experts. At the same time, nominal growth in wholesale sales slowed to 0.4%, indicating a real decline of almost 10%.

The Russian Ministry of Economic Development and Trade has also not published data on GDP dynamics for June, likely due to the lack of primary data from Rosstat.
Rosstat stopped publishing this data a month after Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s speech at SPIEF 2025, where he warned the government against “any recession” and called for “at all costs” to keep the economy from falling.
However, this is not the first case of statistical data concealment in Russia. With the beginning of a full-scale war, the Russian Federation hid customs data, the structure of gold and foreign exchange reserves, detailed data on demographics, oil and gas production, and from 2024 – the volume of gasoline and diesel fuel production.
In 2025, data on birth rates and causes of death, as well as statistics on violent crimes, were banned from publication – after criminals sent to war began returning en masse from the front, and the number of serious crimes in the country set a 15-year record.
It was previously reported that the Russian government is preparing state regulation of prices for “borscht set” and milk.
