In Ukraine, one of the creators of modern independence, a famous political figure and scientist, Igor Rafailovich Yukhnovsky, died at the age of 98.

Ukrainians know this respected citizen of Lviv as a theoretical physicist , head of the Institute of Condensed Systems Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the founder of the referendum “for Independence”.

Also during Kuchma’s presidency, Yukhnovsky was his first deputy prime minister in the government. Lviv Mayor Andrey Sadovoy announced his death on social networks.

In the note, he called Yukhnovsky the creator of Ukraine and the face of its independence.

“We’ll inform you about the farewell and funeral later,” Sadovoy said.

Yukhnovsky – as the creator of Ukraine

Igor Yukhnovsky is known to history as the founder of the idea to hold a referendum for the independence of Ukraine (December 1, 1991). Then our nation, to the question: “Do you confirm the Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine?” – answered “yes”. This was supported by 90.32% of the population. In total, 31,891,742 people took part in the event (this is almost all of Ukraine – 84.18%).

At that time, Yukhnovsky also headed one of the most significant parties, which then opposed the communist line, the People’s Rada (existed 1990-1994). In addition, in the year of the referendum, Yukhnovsky was a candidate for the presidency of Ukraine, taking 5th place in the vote.

In 2005, for his services to Ukraine, he received the title of “Hero”. Among scientific and educational activities, it is worth mentioning that the outstanding Ukrainian is considered a co-founder of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory (he served as chairman of the institution from 2006 to 2010).

In addition, Yukhnovsky was the director of the Institute of Condensed Systems Physics at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, an honorary doctor of the Institute of Theoretical Physics named after.
