“The ‘Black Death’ of the Third Millennium”: “Magyar” spoke about the role of drones in war

07/27/2026

The commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Robert Brovdi “Magyar”, recalled how one day drones suddenly dropped grenades on the trench where his unit was located. At that moment, he realized that a technological revolution was taking place: defensive or reconnaissance drones were turning into offensive weapons. Now the military considers drones to be the “black death” of the third millennium.

“Magyar” said this in an interview with Le Monde. “I bought small drones so that children could play with them… Who could have predicted this? Carrying a gun in your bag without a weapons permit is a violation of the law, but small drones can be bought freely. Now I believe that drones are the “black death” of the third millennium,” he explained the danger posed by UAVs.

After that ambush, “Magyar” gathered 12 volunteers and funds to create an assault battalion, which in 2024 became the “Birds of Magyar” brigade, which became part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The unit’s motto: “Eyes and Sting.”

How drones work against the enemy

Brody became famous for counting the number of Russian occupiers eliminated by his brigade, as well as for his videos of strikes on the invaders. This summer, he is leading Operation Crimea and continues to strike oil refineries deep inside Russia.

Since the beginning of the summer, Ukrainian medium-range drones have also been hitting targets in the Azov and Black Seas daily, as well as military and energy facilities in Crimea. “Magyar” personally apologized to Ukrainians living in occupied Crimea for the “constant stress, blocked bridges and roads, and darkness” they have to endure.

“Please be patient, stay away from military facilities and anything that could catch fire, report your location, and just be careful: the “birds” work flawlessly, but the risk of being hit by debris remains,” he said.

His philosophy regarding the operation being conducted on Russian territory is different: Brody would like the Russians to realize that they are at war and that they are no longer out of reach, even 1,500 or 2,000 kilometers from Ukraine.

“Putin’s support is at an all-time low. People need to understand that the king is naked,” he noted.

The strategy of the SBS commander and his 12 brigades is to destroy more soldiers than Moscow can mobilize. According to him, the unmanned corps makes up only 2.5% of Ukrainian troops, but single-handedly destroyed a third of Russian forces.

“I don’t even want to say the word ‘Russians’: I’m not killing people, I’m killing pests. My videos show those who are about to join Putin’s army that what will happen to them has absolutely nothing to do with heroism,” says “Magyar.”

As OBOZ.UA reported, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the Ukrainian program for creating long-range drones is entering a new stage of development. According to him, this year Ukraine plans to receive drones with a flight range of over 4 thousand kilometers, and in 2027 this figure should increase to 5–10 thousand kilometers.
