On the night of January 22, a plane landed at the Ukrainian airport Boryspil, delivering 90 tons of lethal weapons from the United States . This is the first batch of security assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the amount of $200 million. Earlier, this assistance package was approved by US President Joe Biden.
The US Embassy in Ukraine noted that this batch includes not only lethal weapons, but also other ammunition.
“This demonstrates the firm commitment of the United States to Ukraine’s sovereign right to self-defense,” the embassy said in a statement.
The U.S. provided more than $650 million in security assistance to Ukraine last year, including this aid package, and more than $2.7 billion in security assistance overall since 2014.
“The United States will continue to provide such assistance to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine, supporting them in the constant defense of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine from Russian aggression,” the embassy said.
Military assistance to Ukraine: what is known
The Baltic countries also agreed to help Ukraine with weapons. Aid deliveries will begin shortly. Thus, Estonia is transferring anti-tank Javelins to Ukraine, and Latvia has decided to transfer lethal and non-lethal weapons to Ukraine.
The Czech Republic is preparing to provide Ukraine with artillery shells of 152 mm caliber.
Canada will also give Ukraine $120 million in aid. In addition, the country’s government is considering the supply of military equipment.
Britain provided Ukraine with anti-tank weapons. It is intended for defensive purposes.
