The Russian intelligence agent who committed the terrorist attack in Odessa on July 5 has been detained by law enforcement officers.

According to the press service of the regional police and the regional SBU, the perpetrator was a previously convicted 22-year-old resident of Zaporizhia. He was recruited through Telegram channels.

As the investigation established, the agent planted a pre-prepared improvised explosive device (IED) under the car specified by the handler. So that the customers would see the explosion, he installed a remote access phone opposite the crime scene.

As a result of the explosion, a civilian was injured: he received serious bodily injuries, and the car was completely burned. As specified by the regional prosecutor’s office, the car was driven by an employee of an enterprise that deals with defense orders.

The curator promised to pay the agent, but he never received the money. He was detained at the Odessa railway station, from where he planned to escape back to Zaporozhye.

The defendant was informed of suspicion of committing a terrorist act (Part 2 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code). He faces up to 12 years in prison.

Let us recall that an Opel car exploded today at about 10:00 in a courtyard on Varnenska Street. It was previously reported that the man in the car was a military man.
