The Kremlin has said Ukraine renouncing its intention to become a Nato member would significantly help address Russian security concerns as the region teeters on the brink of war.

Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov was responding to comments given to the BBC by Ukraine’s ambassador to the UK yesterday, which suggested Ukraine could drop its bid to join Nato to avoid war with Russia.

Ambassador Vadym Prystaiko was forced to walk back his comments this morning after Kyiv renounced his remarks, saying the goal of Nato membership is enshrined in the national constitution.

It comes as James Heappey, the under-secretary of state for the Armed Forces, has warned that Europe is closer to war than it has been since the Second World War as Russia continues to build up troops around Ukraine.

“I fear we are closer [to war] than we’ve been on this Continent for 70 years,” he told the BBC’s Today programme.

  1. From that, I would infer that there is some wiggle room.
Nato membership is worth Jackshit. So drop it for peace.
International lawyers need to be drafted in to formulate a cast iron agreement right away.

    • I agree. NATO is dying. Ukraine can do better being with another defense organization, which will one day come to pass.

  2. I have no problem with Ukraine not joining a failed organisation like NATO. Only this won’t appease Putler, he wants his terrorists to be recognised, giving Russia a veto over Ukrainian politics, via the totally failed Minsk agreements. The way around this is by compromising, Ukraine don’t join NATO, Russia remove all their trash and Russian passport holders back to Russia, and give Ukraine control of the border. I doubt Putler would agree to that, because he wants the total subserviance of Ukraine.

    • I think he won’t leave Ukraine unless by military force.
Ukraine just needs to come out of the immediate crisis intact and then gather strength, so they can never again be terrorised and blackmailed in this shameful way by nazi vermin.

      • Yeah. then they need to look around and see the enemies of Ukraine in the EU, and there are plenty to choose from.

  3. “I fear we are closer [to war] than we’ve been on this Continent for 70 years,”
We should have to be at this point if…
I’m so tired of saying the same thing, over and over again… We all know about our worthless leaders already.
