Technological and tactical innovations are changing the nature of the war in Ukraine: ISW explained why Russia began to use motorcycles for the offensive

Russian forces are trying to compensate for Ukrainian technological adaptations and the use of drones on the front lines, which is why they are integrating  motorcycles and other civilian vehicles into offensive operations along the entire front line.

The technology is loud and blocks the sound of approaching drones, but allows the occupiers to increase their speed and maneuverability during assaults, according to a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

A sergeant in a Ukrainian unmanned systems battalion said that Russian troops are increasingly resorting to infantry and motorized assaults on motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, and light vehicles to advance in areas where the Ukrainian Armed Forces are using drones to hold positions. According to the military, the occupiers are doing this to disperse their forces so that it is easier to avoid drone strikes.

A Ukrainian soldier operating in the Pokrovsky sector added that since March 20, Russian troops have carried out 13 motorized assaults on motorcycles there. Another soldier added that in this sector, the enemy cannot bring heavy armored vehicles into positions due to disrupted logistics, and is therefore forced to change tactics to prioritize daily infantry assaults supported by motorcycles.

Technological and tactical innovations are changing the nature of the war in Ukraine: ISW explained why Russia began to use motorcycles for the offensive

“Russian troops across the frontline are attempting to maneuver heavy armored vehicles close to the line of fire without being hit by Ukrainian drones. They are likely using the speed, maneuverability, and small size of motorcycles and other light civilian vehicles to mitigate the effectiveness of Ukrainian UAV capabilities,” ISW believes.

Analysts also do not rule out that the Russian command is developing a tactical doctrine for the systematic use of motorcycles in attacks, in particular, it intends to use light transport during an offensive operation in the summer and fall of 2025.

It is noted that previously, the Russian Ministry of Defense and the military command of the occupation army had already reacted to the innovations of Ukrainian UAVs, trying to officially integrate and centralize their own such operations and increase the production of drones.

“Ukrainian and Russian defense-industrial bases continue to compete in the innovation of new, cost-effective systems that improve assault and combat capabilities, as well as counteract each other’s innovations. Russian forces likely see a tactical opportunity in using motorcycles and civilian vehicles to advance and capture as much of Ukraine as possible, despite Ukrainian defenses with drones,” ISW noted.

As OBOZ.UA reported, in the Pokrov direction, the invaders even used electric scooters in their assaults. This resulted in losses of transport and manpower for the enemy.

  1. I’m not sure if motorcycle assaults are the answer to the roach’s problems. I seriously doubt it, seeing the large number of assaults that end in bloodied mess.
Like any other tactic, attacking via dirt bikes requires lots of skills, maybe even more than when attacking on foot. You are fast, but it’s noisy, and you must watch the terrain much more carefully in order to avoid hitting the dirt. In addition, you increase the chances of getting too far apart from your comrades, which can destroy any tactical gains you might’ve had. I also wonder what they do when confronted with concertina wire or other simple obstacles. Another point is, you simply can’t fire back as you have both hands busy controlling the bike. Furthermore, you are completely exposed to the dangers of the battlefield. It’s not so easy to drop on the ground or go behind cover when it gets hot.
Using motorcycles in attacks takes a lot of training and coordination, which are two things that the cockroaches are bad in. This tactic is about as stupid as it gets, and I hope the AFU won’t ever copy it.
I often wonder where mafia land is getting all those bikes from. I suppose they are chink-made.
