Taiwan Should Pay US Defense Costs, Trump Says

The potential next US president has called into question the partnership with one of America’s main allies.

Donald Trump wants Taiwan to pay the United States to protect it from the Chinese threat. According to The Times , the US presidential candidate made this statement in an interview recorded before he announced his election of an anti-Ukrainian vice president.

“They took away about 100% of our [computer] chip business. I think Taiwan should pay us for defense. You know, we’re no different than an insurance company. Taiwan gives us nothing,” Trump said.

As The Times notes, J.D. Vance, whom Trump chose as his vice president if he won the election, argued his reluctance to help Ukraine precisely because it allegedly leaves the US with no weapons for Taiwan. Vance also said that China, not Russia, is the biggest threat to the US.

Taiwan Prime Minister Cho Chung-tay said the island nation has recently increased its defense spending and is spending large sums on weapons from the United States.

“We are ready to take on more responsibility – we protect ourselves and ensure our security. We are also clear that the relationship between Taiwan and the United States has been very strong in recent years. Maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region is our shared responsibility and goal,” he said in response to Trump’s statement.

  1. If the Straight of Taiwan is in a war scenario, US economy will collapse. But idiots all the way…

  2. he must still be in shock Van Gogh because he only says shit! :
    – we have to extort Taiwan and a greeting to my new friend Xi, friend of my friend Rocketman!
    – I don’t like the sanctions that hold Putin by the balls and I choose Vance the transformist!

Trump is like Musk, he has vice in his skin and will rejoice in tearing up all the elaborate and balanced systems in a word: civilized, and take inspiration from the brutal, medieval systems and hysterize everything.
with him all the rotten leaders of the world will have nuclear bombs!

    he’s not a statesman, he’s a car salesman
If you are looking for an Amiche car radio this is really the right horse to bet on!

  3. The words given by the USA through the “Budapest Memorandum” and the “Taiwan Relations Act” (…”in furtherance of the principle of maintaining peace and stability in the Western Pacific area, the United States shall make available to Taiwan such defense articles and defense services in such quantity as may be necessary to enable Taiwan to maintain a sufficient self-defense capacity”) are obviously no longer worth anything in the Trump era.

This American leadership at the global level no longer exists or at least seems to no longer be assumed. Sooner or later everyone will also have to reconsider things in trade with the USA (TAFTA, ALENA, etc.).
More protectionism, less trade, less security, more uncertainty and chaos. The Trump era.

  4. The Budapest Agreement was dead the second it was signed. The final death knell came on 2014.
