During the Assad era, the Russians latched onto Syria’s main foreign trade route.

The transitional government of Syria has broken an agreement with Russia on control over the country’s main commercial port in the city of Tartus . This was reported by the Syrian publication Shaam , citing sources in the Syrian Ministry of Information.

The agreement was concluded in January 2019 between the General Directorate of Syrian Ports and the Russian company STG-ENGINEERING. The contract provided for Russian investment in the development of the Tartus commercial port for 49 years, but during this time it transferred actual control over the port to the Russian side. At the same time, Russia received up to 65% of the total profit generated by the port.

Now, the General Authority of the Port of Tartus has cancelled the agreement and demanded that the Russian company leave the port immediately. As the journalists’ sources stated, all the port’s income now belongs to the Syrian state.
