It will be in service with the army within two to three years.

The Swedish Armed Forces are planning to purchase long-range weapons that will allow them to strike targets on the territory of the Russian Federation.

According to the TT news agency , this was stated by the country’s Minister of Defense Michael Klessin. He did not name specific models of weapons, but revealed that we are talking about cruise missiles and rocket artillery. The range relevant for Sweden can vary from 24 to 80 kilometers:

“First of all, it’s about deterrence. Having the ability at any time not only to fight on one’s own territory, but also to expose the attacker to the risk of being forced to defend themselves on their own land. Having the ability to strike at logistics, deployment sites, etc.

With such systems, the country could play a much more active role in deterring NATO in neighboring countries, the minister added. Increasing defense spending would allow the country to invest in drones and air defense. At the same time, Klessin says he does not plan to buy a lot of drones and leave them “on the shelf,” because the war in Ukraine has shown that UAVs can become obsolete very quickly.

Sweden strengthens its defense

After deciding to join NATO in 2023, Sweden has radically changed its defense strategy – from long-standing neutrality to strategic deterrence.

The country is significantly increasing defense spending, transferring weapons , equipment, and funding to Ukraine, and modernizing its own military-industrial complex and infrastructure.

Such a transformation is a key component of regional security in the face of Russian aggression. Intelligence agencies in a number of countries warn that the Russian occupation army may carry out aggression against NATO countries in the coming years.

  1. Missiles that have a range between 24 to 80 kilometers, are not long range missiles. Sweden need missiles with a range to reach moscow.
