Details: Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson is expected to announce the handing over of Jas 39 Gripen C/D fighter jets on 28 May.
Meanwhile, negotiations are expected to begin on the sale to Ukraine of the more modern Jas 39 Gripen E aircraft, financed through an EU loan.
Quote: “Kristersson will visit the Uppland Air Wing in Uppsala [on 28 May]. A press conference will be held as part of the visit at which news regarding international cooperation in the field of aviation will be presented.”
Earlier, Ukraine and Sweden had already signed a memorandum of intent, which provides for a potential deal for 100–150 Gripen fighter jets.
As noted, the Gripen was designed with conditions similar to those in which Ukrainian aviation currently operates in mind. The aircraft can even use ordinary roads and short runways for takeoff and landing.
The fighters are also known for their rapid turnaround times. For air-to-air combat missions, a full rearmament and refueling takes less than 10 minutes.
The Gripen E variant is equipped with a General Electric F414G engine and can reach speeds of up to 2,500 km/h. The aircraft is capable of carrying long-range Meteor missiles, which allow it to engage targets at distances exceeding 100 kilometers.
Background:
- President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in 2025 that Ukraine expected to receive 150 Gripen aircraft, with the first deliveries planned for 2026.
- Kristersson earlier announced the signing of a letter of intent with Zelenskyy on the sale of 100-150 Gripen E fighters to Ukraine.
- Kristersson believes it is possible to begin deliveries of Gripen aircraft to Ukraine within three years.
- Ukraine’s Air Force noted that Swedish Gripens cost less than comparable aircraft, are cheaper to maintain and will integrate smoothly into Ukraine’s aviation system.

That’s great. But :
“Kristersson believes it is possible to begin deliveries of Gripen aircraft to Ukraine within three years.”
WTF?
That’s a max of three years i guess. Ukrainian pilots need to be trained, maintenance facilities need to be set up, Ukrainian mechanics need to study the planes, etc.
