In Sweden, it was recognized that Ukraine has the right to use delivered Swedish weapons to attack objects on the territory of Russia . According to Hallandsposten , this was answered in a comment by the Minister of Defense of the country, Paul Jonsen.

He noted that Ukraine is subject to an unprovoked and illegal war of aggression by Russia.

“According to international law, Ukraine has the right to defend itself with military actions aimed at the enemy’s territory, if they comply with the laws of war. Sweden supports international law and Ukraine’s right to self-defense,” the message states.

Ban on strikes with Western weapons in the Russian Federation

Since the first deliveries of Western weapons to Ukraine, there has been a ban on their use for strikes on the territory of the Russian Federation. However,  according to the NYT , the consensus around this issue is falling apart – in the Biden administration, there is an ongoing debate on relaxing the ban.

For his part, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that  Ukraine’s partner countries should cancel the ban  on the use of their weapons to strike targets on the territory of the Russian Federation.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Baiba Braje, said that there are already countries that  have provided Ukraine with weapons without restrictions for strikes against the Russian Federation . 

At the same time, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz opposed the use of Western weapons on the territory of Russia in order to “prevent the war in Ukraine from turning into a “big war”.
