Mechernich is home to an important Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) base: “Patriot” air defense systems are repaired there. According to information from WDR, NDR and SZ, drones were reportedly flown over the barracks during the night.
Mechernich lies on the edge of the Eifel region, southwest of Bonn. Here is an important Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) base: A highly secure underground facility, 130 meters below ground, houses a highly secure material depot. Covering an area of 30,000 square meters, it stores equipment and spare parts for the armed forces’ military equipment. It is a key component of the Bundeswehr’s logistics network.
But that’s not all: This is also where the Bundeswehr specialists responsible for the maintenance and repair of the “Patriot” air defense system work. The facility, known within the armed forces as the “Patriot shipyard,” is probably the only one of its kind in Europe.
According to information from WDR, NDR and Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ), the recent drone overflights over the site are alarming security authorities to a very high degree: On Friday night, employees of a security company are said to have observed a total of six drone overflights between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Apparently police officers are on site.
During the most recent sighting, police officers from the Euskirchen district police authority, who had already been alerted, were reportedly on site and also witnessed at least one drone flyover. A drone is even said to have briefly circled above the emergency services. This information comes from a confidential police report.
According to the report, military police from the German Armed Forces also observed the incident from a distance of approximately 40 meters. Their initial assessment, the report states, suggests the drone may have been a Fly-380 VTOL. These drones have a wingspan of around 3.8 meters and a range of up to 400 kilometers. They can reach speeds of up to 150 km/h and can carry payloads of more than ten kilograms.
The background is unclear.
It is unclear who is responsible for the overflights in Mechernich. Drones of this type are used, among other things, for surveying, mapping, but also for border surveillance and transport in difficult-to-access regions. The investigations so far, which also involve the North Rhine-Westphalia State Criminal Police Office and federal security authorities, have reportedly not revealed that a misguided surveying drone was involved.
Police are investigating suspected unauthorized images of military installations, weapons, or sensitive areas. The Military Counterintelligence Service and the Joint Drone Defense Center in Berlin are also involved.
“We can confirm the drone sighting you inquired about,” a spokesperson for the German Armed Forces’ Operational Command said in response to an inquiry. A total of two drones were sighted. “We ask for your understanding that we cannot comment on ongoing investigations.”
Repeated overflights of military installations
Suspicious drone overflights of military installations have been frequent in Germany in recent years. These include over naval bases in the North and Baltic Seas and over facilities where Ukrainian soldiers were trained. Security authorities suspect that Russian state agencies or hired “disposable agents” may be responsible for some of these flights. Experts believe that these flights could be used to spy on military and other critical infrastructure, possibly in preparation for acts of sabotage.
In April 2025, a soldier at a base near Emden observed several men apparently flying drones. This Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) location is also considered highly sensitive: More than 350-meter-high mast antennas stand in the area, used to transmit encrypted commands to submarines. When the guard approached the men, they reportedly shouted something at him in Russian and then drove off in a van. The individuals have not been identified to this day.
As reported by WDR and NDR, several drones were sighted in December 2025 over the site of the new “Arrow 3” air defense system in the Annaburg Heath, in the border region between Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt. They had been detected by a surveillance system. German Armed Forces soldiers subsequently used an assault rifle with a special aiming optic against the drones, but did not hit any.

They never know who is doing this. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to take a wild guess as to who would be interested in these facilities. Of course, it could be anyone, even a teenager with his new birthday gift. But it would be a good thing to concentrate on the trash nation who has a strong interest in such places.
Maybe it would be a good thing for Germany and the West in general to return the favor by spying on mafia miliary facilities and to retaliate in every other possible way. And eye for an eye?
Germany has recently been blathering about creating more security from drone threats. At the beginning of the year, the ruling coalition amended the Air Security Act and expanded the German Armed Forces’ powers for drone defense. However, this has not been fully completed yet and in many cases no one knows who is in charge when a drone threat appears. In the meantime, such threats are increasing. A common circus show is better organized.
Ukraine are using drones to take out other drones. Maybe asking Ukraine for help might be the answer.
I would’ve expected for this to happen, but certain Western countries have a hard time giving Ukraine enough credit to teach THEM a thing or two.
