On the night of October 6, explosions erupted in Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Russia . They were followed by a fire.
Local residents claimed that the local Sverdlov plant was targeted. This enterprise is part of the Russian military-industrial complex and is one of the largest producers of explosives in the Russian Federation.
What is known
Local public forums were the first to write about the drone attack on Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod region.
Russians on social media claimed that the first explosion was heard over the city at approximately 2:50 a.m. After that, according to various versions, from 25 to more than 30 explosions were heard within an hour.

Meanwhile, some Russian Z-channels that paid attention to what was happening in Dzerzhinsk somewhat downplayed the scale: they wrote about “more than 10 explosions” that occurred not only over Dzerzhinsk, but also over Nizhny Novgorod.
“According to locals, the air defense is working on UAVs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. As eyewitnesses told SHOT, the explosions began at around 3:35 a.m. In total, 10-15 loud sounds were heard in the north of Dzerzhinsk and in the suburbs of Nizhny Novgorod (the cities are 40 km apart). Local residents claim that bright flashes were visible in the sky , and the loud sounds triggered the car alarms. There is no official information yet,” writes one of these channels.

Judging by the footage that has appeared online, the “bright flashes” last night in Dzerzhinsk were not only in the sky. One of the videos taken by eyewitnesses recorded at least two possible arrivals.
Residents of the city claim that the local Sverdlov plant, which is an important “cog” of the Russian military-industrial complex, was under attack.
In the area of the plant after the explosions, the Russians observed the glow from the fire.
According to the Telegram channel world.militares, the fire is on the territory of the enterprise.
” Ukrainian troops reportedly attacked the Sverdlov plant in Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod region. Images shared by residents show a fire at the facility,” the report said.

Why the Sverdlov Plant in Dzerzhinsk is important for the aggressor state
The Sverdlov Plant is a city-forming enterprise of Dzerzhinsk and is part of the military-industrial complex of Russia.

It is one of the largest Russian manufacturers of industrial explosives, transfer charges for the mining industry, perforating charges for the oil and gas industry, and seismic and geophysical work.
At least 30% of production is defense products, the same amount is explosives , 35% is industrial chemicals, and 5% is mechanical engineering.
The enterprise uses all available methods of ammunition equipment – pressing, screwing, pouring. The plant can equip almost all types of ammunition: aviation and artillery shells, aviation bombs, including those adjusted for the target, warheads of cumulative anti-tank guided missiles, ammunition for engineering troops, including helicopter mine laying systems and the most modern anti-tank and anti-landing mines, warheads for air defense missile systems, according to data from open sources.
The Sverdlov Plant is the only producer of octogen and hexogen in Russia , and since 2017, judging by reports in Russian propaganda media, an automated workshop for the production of 500 kg air bombs has been built there.
Since June 23, 2023, the plant has been included in the sanctions list of the European Union countries for the production of explosives “used by the Russian armed forces during Russia’s illegal and unjustified military invasion of Ukraine in 2022.” Sanctions against the enterprise have also been imposed by Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Switzerland.
Since March 18, 2023, the plant has been under Ukrainian sanctions “for supporting actions that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine,” and now, apparently, “kinetic sanctions” are already being applied to this enterprise – through the efforts of Ukrainian soldiers.
OBOZ.UA previously reported that Ukraine is already using Flamingo missiles to strike Russian refineries. At least, this is what sources at The Economist claim.
The publication believes that if the FP-5 is able to penetrate Russian air defenses, it will take the Ukrainian deepstrike campaign to a “new level of destructive power.”
