This brutal war and military crimes of Russian troops caused a humanitarian crisis in Ukraine with thousands civilians killed and millions becoming refuges. As a reaction to this act of aggression, many international companies decided to leave the Russian market, while some others continue doing business there as usual. We track such decisions of companies and urge them to stop funding the war.

For 11 months, from the beginnig of the war, the company has not taken any visible steps to exit and continues to sell chips and dairy products in Russia. As we see in 2023 – the company didn’t met it promises, as its local entity in Russia (Unilever Rus LLC or ООО “Юнилевер Русь”, tax id 7705183476) generated almost the same volume of local revenue in 2022 (RUB 84.9bn) vs RUB 86bn in 2021 or just 2% less. At the same time, its net profit increased from RUB 4.9bn to RUB 9.2bn or +91%! Also, due to this significant volume of profit, it was able to increase the local capital to RUB 34.5bn in 2022 from RUB 25.3bn in 2021 or +37%. It means that in fact the company reinvested the profit which is equal to investment of the new capital in the country. Moreover, the company will be obliged to pay profit tax (in addition to VAT, taxes from salary and other taxes) and indirectly support Russia’s war machine in such a way. Unilever Rus LLC also paid the equivalent of $331mn of taxes in 2021 (and minimum the same amount in 2022 based on their financials). That’s why we decided to change the company’s status from “Scaling Back” one to “Continue Operations”. The NACP added Unilever to the list of “International Sponsors of War”.

What’s bad, besides so many companies willing to finance a major war in Europe, is that even if someone wants to boycott each one, in regard to his or her shopping or business needs, it would be a difficult task. You need the entire, loooong list to keep up.

I would suggest that a lot of politicians/ex politicians have ties to these companies supporting nazi russia, they all feed from the same trough. There are countless political figures on the boards of these multi-national companies, and profit comes well above human lives on the grand scheme of things.
This seems to be so. Greed has been a major problem since 2014, when the first – very weak and pathetic – sanctions were made.

What should be done is levy a 100% tax on all profits of these companies earned in Russia since 2014. Since it will take a while to audit, they must all be forced to pay an advance of $150m each.
The US and U.K. should formally declare that Russia IS committing genocide and is run by a criminal nazi regime.

In France at the moment “Leroy Kremlin” is running an advertising campaign where they say: “we can build everything, even the future” (and every time I hear the word missing at the end of the slogan : “fascist”).
We live in free societies, the US and France, but I think we should be a little more vigilant and offensive against radicalism, regardless under what politics, motto, religion it might be. It would require a careful balancing act to prevent our rights as free citizens from being infringed upon. But, with the right people in the right places in our governments, this should not be a utopian dream. Harsh realities will make this necessary, sooner or later.
The one company that surprised me was TEVA. I would have thought TEVA along with other Israeli companies would have learned their lesson about Russia. Guess not.
