Reporting from Moscow, here’s my dispatch from last weekend for BBC Radio’s From Our Own Correspondent.

  1. Steve’s style is reminiscent of the great Sir Alistair Cooke, who presented a weekly 15 minute talk for BBC radio; Letter From America, which ran for an incredible 58 years, up to his death at age 95 in 2004.
    An impressive achievement!
Wiki : “he would speak of a topical issue in the US, tying together different strands of observation and anecdote and often ending on a humorous or poignant note.”
Those talks turned out to be superb primary source history, which I often listen to when on a long journey.
The difference is that Steve has to choose his words far more carefully, to protect his liberty.
This we are required to “read between the lines.”
