Serbia provides modest but symbolically important support

Serbia, one of Russia’s last political allies in Europe , has decided to invest in restoring Ukraine’s energy sector after Russia’s criminal attacks, according to a press release from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), which will provide support.
The total amount of assistance provided by Serbia is modest but symbolically important – 2 million euros. The money will be used to purchase and supply high-voltage transformers, which are critically needed to restore the capacity of the power grid and provide electricity to millions of Ukrainians.
“Serbia stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, who are facing unprecedented challenges to their energy security. This contribution is a tangible demonstration of our support for the restoration of vital services, ensuring electricity supply to hospitals, schools and homes in these difficult times,” said Serbian Ambassador to Ukraine Andon Sapunji.
Relations between Russia and Serbia: latest news
As UNIAN reported, Serbia plans to resume operations at a sanctioned enterprise linked to Gazprom, indicating continued economic cooperation with Russia despite international pressure.
We also reported that the European Union is concerned about the presence of Russians in Serbia and other countries in the region, which is seen as a potential channel of Moscow’s influence.
In the military-technical sphere, there is a certain weakening of Russia’s role: for example, the modernization of Serbian MiG-29 fighters using Chinese missiles indicates diversification of weapons sources and a partial departure from Russian technologies.
However, other forms of cooperation remain: according to media reports, Serbia may have provided the Russians with opportunities to test military technologies , which highlights the existence of security contacts between the countries.
