Situation around Ukraine does not change Sweden’s stance on joining NATO

STOCKHOLM: The situation around Ukraine did not affect Sweden’s position regarding joining NATO, and Stockholm is not seeking to become a member of the alliance, the Swedish state secretary to the prime minister, Karin Wallensteen, said.

“In a situation like this, more than ever, stability and predictability is important… Our security policy is set… We want to be a good, strong partner to NATO, but we’re not looking to join,” Wallensteen told Politico on Friday.

The precarious situation around Ukraine has worsened in recent weeks with the United States and the European Union raising concerns over Russian military buildup at the Ukrainian border, and NATO urging allies to boost their military support for Kiev.

Russia, in turn, has repeatedly denied allegations of intending to invade its neighbor, pointing out that NATO’s military activity near Russian borders poses a threat to its national security while hampering efforts toward peaceful resolution in Ukraine. (ANI/Sputnik)

  1. “We want to be a good, strong partner to NATO, but we’re not looking to join,” Wallensteen told Politico on Friday.

When Russia invade Sweden, don’t expect any help from NATO, you’re on your own, as Ukraine found out.

    • According to Biden if Americans shoot at ruSSians it’s WWIII. So i doubt anybody will help Sweden, even if they are in Nato. The US will only tell everybody to get the hell out if the ruSSians invade.

    • I hope you’re right but for now it looks like Greta is running Sweden and she doesn’t like the pollution military equipment puts out and Sweden’s spending on military is even less than Germany’s at 1.2%.

  2. “In a situation like this, more than ever, stability and predictability is important…”

I can’t say that Sweden’s stance has anything to do with common sense. It’s been much too obvious that Europe is currently existing in a state of instability and the next days, weeks and months are far from being predictable.
Is there any European country outside the UK, Poland and the Baltics with sane politicians?
