“If another missile or other object were to enter our space, whether intentionally or accidentally, if it were shot down and the debris fell on NATO territory, don’t come here to complain. You’ve been warned,” Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski addressed the Russian authorities with these words. He was speaking at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.
An emergency meeting of the UN Security Council regarding the incursion of three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets into Estonian airspace began Monday in New York. The meeting, held as a briefing at the Organization’s headquarters, focused on threats to international peace and security.
At the event, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski mentioned that Russian fighter jets had entered Estonian airspace without Tallinn’s consent , a week after drones—also sent from Russia—flew over Poland. ” If these were accidents, why not admit to them and apologize right away ?” he said.
Radosław Sikorski to the Russians: You are incapable of living in peace with your neighbors
As the head of our diplomacy noted, “we have already forgiven Russia for such cases in the past, but we have heard no apologies, only lies.” “Attacks on Ukraine are intensifying (…). This is their (the Kremlin’s – ed.) commentary on the transition from confrontation to dialogue, which Putin promised in Alaska,” he recalled.
In his opinion, the aforementioned airspace violations “are suspicious because they constitute an escalation of the hybrid war that Russia has been waging against the West for years.” In this context, he listed, among others, the assassinations of politicians, journalists, and human rights defenders, cyberattacks, arson cases in various European countries, and attacks on Ukrainian embassies.
“The UN Security Council has the responsibility to send a clear signal that such provocations will not be tolerated (…). I say to the Russian representatives: we know that you do not care about international law and are incapable of living in peace with your neighbors,” Sikorski said.
Sikorski’s “Only One Request” to Russia. A Warning Was Issued
In the opinion of the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Warsaw, Moscow’s “mad nationalism” includes a “need for domination.” “And this will not end until you realize that the imperial era is over and your empire will not be rebuilt. Your three-day “special military operation” has not even been able to conquer Donbas for 10 years,” he noted.
Then, still addressing the Russians, he referred to 20th-century history. “In 1914, you hastened the outbreak of World War I , which led to your Bolshevik Revolution. By signing the pact between Stalin and Hitler, you hastened the outbreak of World War II, and by Sovietizing Eastern Europe, you triggered the Cold War. Don’t start another war,” he appealed.
He also made “only one request” to the Russian government. “No one supports your attempts to conquer Ukraine, and we will not be intimidated. If another missile or other object were to enter our space, whether intentionally or accidentally, if it were shot down and the debris fell on NATO territory, do not come here to complain. You have been warned,” he added.
Russian fighter jets over Estonia. “They were on combat alert.”
Earlier, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna spoke. “Three armed MiG-31 fighter jets violated Estonian airspace. They entered 10 kilometers into it and flew over 100 kilometers over our sovereign territory,” he said, showing photographs showing radar data and the fighter jets that had flown over his country.
” This red line (on the radar map – ed.) is a violation of Estonian airspace and sovereignty. We can see where the Russian fighters entered, where they were located, and when they left the airspace. They were warned in advance, and there was clear communication on various channels. It lasted 12 minutes,” he assured, adding that the planes “were armed with missiles and in combat readiness.”
The Security Council meeting was convened at Estonia’s request by South Korea, which holds the Council’s September presidency. The meeting is attended by, among others, the foreign ministers of Poland, Estonia, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Ukraine, as well as Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
This is the first-ever UN Security Council meeting convened at Estonia’s request. It comes just over a week after a similar meeting was held regarding Russian drones over Poland.
