According to journalists, such a pact will be signed on May 9.

France and Poland are set to sign a pact covering defence and economic issues, the latest step by the countries to deepen military cooperation amid Russian aggression and uncertainty over US security guarantees, the Financial Times reported .

It is noted that such a document will be signed by French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on May 9.

“The pact, which has been in the works for years, has taken on new significance after US President Donald Trump began making insinuations about Russia and threatening to withdraw American guarantees that have underpinned European security for decades,” the publication emphasized.Video of the dayPlay Video

At the same time, security analyst at the Polish think tank Defence24, Aleksander Olekh, emphasized:

“Tusk is also sending a signal to Washington, our main ally for many years. This is a clear signal that Poland is not only dependent on the US, but can also have other strong nuclear allies.”

The issue of signing such a treaty arose when Tusk suggested that Poland was considering the possibility of being protected under France’s nuclear umbrella. In addition, the prime minister announced that Poland would develop its own nuclear warheads to deter Russia.

In turn, a French official told the FT that Macron and Tusk were unlikely to address the issue of nuclear deterrence during their meeting in the northeastern French city of Nancy. Advertisingad

What will this treaty mean for Poland?

The publication noted that such an agreement would cover many issues and would give Poland a treaty similar to the one France already has with Germany, Italy, and Spain.

“France also has narrower defense treaties with other countries, such as the Lancaster Treaty with Great Britain,” the article recalled.

Tusk also stated that this agreement would lead to a “very serious acceleration” of economic and military security on the continent.

In addition, the French official emphasized to the FT that the agreement shows that Paris views Warsaw as an increasingly important partner against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine.

“The aim is to deepen and operationalize key elements of Franco-Polish relations, including threat assessment, joint defense projects and broadening the conversation on strategic issues, including nuclear deterrence,” the French government official added.

Also, under the new agreement, France may increase sales of military equipment to Poland.

“Macron is now talking about the need to buy European, but everyone understands that his priority is to sell French [equipment] to Poland and other EU partners,” the former Polish military official explained.
