Senator Blumenthal demands the diversion of a tanker carrying Russian diesel fuel bound for the US

US Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal has called on the company that owns the tanker Agioi Fanendes, which is carrying the first shipment of Russian diesel to US ports, to change the vessel’s course.

The senator wrote about this in an address he published on the social network X, Censor.NET reports .

What is known about the tanker?

The Maltese-flagged tanker Agioi Fanendes has loaded 40,000 tons of diesel fuel in the Russian Baltic port of Primorsk. It is scheduled to arrive in New York and New Jersey on November 7.

Senator’s requirements

Blumenthal, who was one of the authors of the legislative initiative on “hellish” sanctions against Russia, is demanding that the shipowner, Eastern Mediterranean Maritime Limited, change the vessel’s course and refrain from any future transactions with Russian diesel fuel.

Although the US Treasury Department issued a temporary license to export Russian diesel, according to the senator, such a license cannot take precedence over a clear and unambiguous law.

” The administration’s conflicting guidance on Russian energy in recent weeks should not be used as an excuse to ignore legislative prohibitions. The President may have authorized this transaction, but only Congress can give it legal effect ,” he said.

Blumenthal also demands information by October 31 about which other companies or organizations are involved in the operation to transfer Russian diesel fuel and whether the company has received any instructions from the US Treasury Department or another federal agency.

“If the Agioi Fanendes vessel enters the port and unloads its cargo, you will be a participant in an illegal operation or will facilitate its implementation ,” the democrat added. Джерело: https://censor.net/ua/n4030918
