SBU head: Russia no longer using Crimean bridge for weapons supplies after repeated strikes

Russia no longer uses the Crimean Bridge to supply weapons to the front after Ukrainian strikes damaged the crossing, Vasyl Maliuk, the head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), said on air on March 25.

The bridge, also called the Kerch Bridge, connects the Russian mainland with the Russian-occupied Crimean peninsula, making it a crucial supply route for the Russian military in Ukraine.

Construction on the 19-kilometer-long bridge began after the illegal 2014 annexation and occupation of Crimea, and was completed in 2018.

The bridge was heavily damaged in Ukrainian strikes in October 2022 and July 2023. The plan to strike the bridge was first conceived in March 2022, Maliuk said.

Before the bridge came under attack, “42 to 46 trains carrying weapons and ammunition passed there per day,” Maliuk said.

“Today there are four or five in a day,” of which four are for passenger traffic, and one is for consumer goods, Maliuk said.

Russian proxy authorities in occupied Crimea regularly shut down traffic on the Crimean Bridge amid reports of explosions and drone strikes.

When the structure is fully restored, Russia will likely use the bridge once again for weapons supplies, Maliuk said, but implied that Ukraine plans to then carry out another attack.

“Everything has its time,” Maliuk said.

  1. I rather think that the SBU has something up its sleeve with such a statement. I simply can’t believe that the mafiosi aren’t using the bridge to supply their troops. It’s simply too convenient. And now, after so many landing ships have been sunk or damaged, the importance of the bridge should be even greater. We’ll see…

    • Unfortunately the putinaZis have now built a railway to transport their murder weapons to Ukraine.

      • Unlike a large bridge, a railroad is an easy target. Ukraine will find the weak links in this RR and destroy them.

        • This rail line has to cross over 3 rivers. No doubt Ukraine will destroy any bridges that the orcs throw up.

          • Either way you look at it, the Kerch Bridge remains being the prime route into Crimea and southern Ukraine.

  2. Contrast Ukrainian media women like Anastasia and her expert guest Dinara and compare them with the sulfurous putinaZi skanks Skabby, Zakharova and Simonyan on kremkrapper media and you “get” the cultural difference: on the Russia side you have cancerous hatred, lies and glorification of extreme violence and horror.
On the Ukrainian side, you have civilised, intelligent women who are somehow able to discuss things that are very painful to them in a professional way.
Btw, Dinara reminds us that at the time of putler’s invasion of Krym, Ukraine could only call on 5000 combat troops.
Obviously puker’s puppet Yanukovich had been decimating his army for three whole years while putler built up his.

      • These are impressive pictures, Bill, thanks. Damn, such bridges obviously have no safety redundancy! Once one set of pillars fails, the whole construction collapses. Even worse, the pillars have almost no protection, like an extended concrete island, to safeguard against such a major impact. It’s actually a miracle this hasn’t happened earlier, considering the size of modern cargo ships and the rate of steering failures. Only good that this didn’t happen during daytime hours, when traffic would have very much increased the casualty numbers. My condolences to the families of the road construction workers doing a night shift there. ☹
