The Religious Foundation of Russian Commitment to a Ukrainian Genocide

The American public understands the religious motivation behind Iranian jihad directed at Israel. They do not understand that religious foundations of Russia’s deep commitment to genocide in Ukraine.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is the largest genocide directed by a superpower at the people of a sovereign nation since WWII. During their invasion, Russia has committed tens of thousands of war crimes aimed at the elimination of the Ukrainian people, their culture and Identity.

Russian genocide includes mass executions of civilians, rape of children and the elderly, experimentation and organ removal from the bodies of prisoners of war, torture, targeting of civilians for murder, sexual slavery, kidnapping of children and calls for “Zachistka” or cleansing through the execution of Ukrainians. Throughout Ukraine mass graves have ben uncovered, similar to those left by the Third Reich 80 years prior, which indicate that we are just now scratching the surface of Russian acts of genocide.

Putin’s objective to eliminate Ukraine as a sovereign nation stems not merely from strategic or territorial ambitions, but a deeper pseudo-religious conviction rooted in Russian state mythology with a distinctive messianic and eschatological vision. At the heart of this worldview is the belief in “Holy Rus,” a mysticized vision of a spiritually united Slavic empire, with Moscow as the “Third Rome,” destined to restore divine order in the world.

In this framework, Ukraine is not simply a rebellious neighbor but a heretical territory that must be reabsorbed and purified to fulfill Russia’s eschatological mission. Ukrainian independence, identity, and democratic aspirations are thus viewed as blasphemous—an existential threat to Russia’s messianic narrative of national salvation.

This Russian ideology fuses Orthodox religious motifs with imperial nostalgia and post-Soviet chauvinism, elevating the Russian state into a sacred vessel of historic destiny. Figures like Alexander Dugin and Russian clergy like Patriarch Kirill, promote the idea that Russia must suffer and triumph in an apocalyptic struggle against Western liberalism, decadence, and pluralism—with Ukraine portrayed as a corrupted vassal of that hostile West.

In this theological-political worldview embraced and promoted by Putin, the destruction of Ukrainian culture, language, history, and sovereignty is not an unfortunate byproduct of war, but the central objective. The war is not merely geopolitical—it is sacramental. To erase Ukrainian identity is to fulfill Russia’s divine calling.

What are the implications? Here is one of many:

It is impossible to have a negotiated peace with bloody zealots. Their identity is inextricably linked to their lust for genocide. There is as much hope of a peace negotiation with butchers of Bucha, as there is with butchers of October 7.

Russia can and will be defeated.

Peace Negotiations in the Age of Russian and Islamic Devotion to Genocide

Unless Trump’s objective is to pursue “just peace,” it’s time to take “negotiated peace deals” off the table with Russia and Iran. Under Mr. Trump they have become deadly, counter-productive and contribute to greater suffering and death. They are delay tactics. Washington uses them to deflect public attention from broken promises and ineptitude. Moscow and Tehran use the president as cover to buy them time for increased aggression. Never ending “two more week” windows are distractions from the real action needed to bring lasting peace.

The first thing to understand is that neither Israel nor Ukraine believe a negotiated peace is possible. They are 100% correct.

Because Israel and Ukraine want to preserve a positive relationship with the American president, they are willing to show Trump respect as he continues the charade, but that’s as far as it goes.

The second point is equally important:

Both Ukraine and Israel believe that waiting for Donald Trump to move the needle is an exercise in futility which jeopardizes national security and costs lives. This is background on the timing of Operation Spider’s Web and Rising Lion.

Both nations understand that peace will not emerge through Trump’s efforts because he lacks the requirements:

1. A proper definition of a “just peace” and
2. The will to make the hard choices necessary to achieve peace.

Here again, they are correct.

Why is a negotiated peace inherently impossible?

Answer – The aggression of Iran (and its jihadist surrogates) and Russia, is not merely driven by strategic considerations. It is a deep abiding religio-philosophical commitment to the annihilation of Israel and Ukraine, respectively, their sovereignty, their culture and identity.

Iran boasts the elimination of the Jewish state and people. Russia denies the existence of a Ukrainian people, culture or nation, and uses claims of Nazism as a pretext for their atrocities and warcrimes to eliminate all who hold to that identity – meaning every living Ukrainian who rejects Putin.

Ultimately, the disagreement is not about Gaza, Jerusalem, Crimea or the Donbas – but the right of Jews and Ukrainians to live as a free and distinctive people.

You CANNOT speak reason to a swarm of bees, nor ask a Great White Shark to become a vegetarian. Nor can you expect a jihadist whose faith demands a commitment to the genocide of the Israeli people, or the heirs of Stalin with their philosophical commitment to the annihilation of Ukrainian culture, sovereignty and people themselves, to suddenly deny their own identity.

You CAN defeat them on the battlefield and prosecute them — as Germany was defeated and prosecuted closing WWII. A Trump appeasement process will never redirect the architects of genocide from their commitment to conquest, rape, torture, murder and kidnapping. It is seared into their conscience and inextricably linked to their identity.
