Russia’s Art of the Deal: U.S. Negotiates as if It’s Selling Condos

Econ Lessons

Hi in my video I explain how the current Czar does not negotiate like a businessman—he negotiates like an emperor reclaiming lost lands. I back this up. His mindset is shaped by figures like Peter the Great, who expanded Russia’s borders through war and diplomacy but always claiming to reclaim land than conquer,; Ivan Ilyin, who preached authoritarian nationalism and the spiritual destiny of Russia, but confused authentic spirituality with political showiness; and Joseph Stalin, who ruled through fear, control, and calculated power plays. These historical influences create a long-term, ruthless negotiation strategy rooted in empire-building, not deal-making.

Meanwhile, the U.S. often approaches these negotiations as if they were Florida real estate deals—sending businessmen and political operators who treat Russia as just another player in the global market. This was evident when a delegation of Florida golfers was sent to “feel out” Russian officials, a stark contrast to the Czar’s cold, calculated approach. The result? A fundamental mismatch in negotiation styles—while Russia plays chess, Washington plays Monopoly.

In this video, we break down the key differences in Russian and American negotiation strategies, why the U.S. continues to be at a disadvantage, and what can be done to level the playing field.
