In addition, the occupiers used various types of torture against prisoners.

During three months of winter, Russian occupiers executed 32 Ukrainian prisoners of war . This is more than in any previous period.

This is stated in the 38th report of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, which was published on March 26. It describes the human rights situation in Ukraine in the period from December 1, 2023 to February 29, 2024.

“During the reporting period, OHCHR received reports of the execution of at least 32 recently captured Ukrainian prisoners of war in 12 separate incidents. OHCHR confirmed three of these incidents, in which Russian forces executed seven Ukrainian military personnel who had disengaged from combat,” the report said.

In addition, experts interviewed 60 Ukrainian soldiers who were recently released from captivity. Most of them were sexually assaulted. There were also threats of rape and castration, beatings or electric shocks to the genitals, and repeated forced nudity, particularly during interrogations and checks for tattoos.

Killing of Ukrainian prisoners by Russians

The Russian occupiers, contrary to international law, execute Ukrainian prisoners, torture them and keep them in terrible conditions. Over the winter alone, several reports appeared in the information field about the execution of members of the Defense Forces, in particular in the east. Thus, at the Zenit position in Avdeevka, the Russians shot Ukrainian soldiers. Moreover, through the relevant organizations it was agreed that they would be taken prisoner, provided with assistance, and then exchanged.

It is also known about the execution of Ukrainian soldiers in the Bakhmut area . The crime was committed on February 24 – footage taken from a drone clearly shows that the defenders came out with their hands raised and did not pose a threat.

The Commissioner for Human Rights of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Dmitry Lubinets, noted that there are many more cases of Ukrainian prisoners being shot by the occupiers than is said publicly.
