14 sailors were rescued, two more are missing.
The Russian bulk carrier Ursa Major sank in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Spain . According to the Spanish publication La Verdad , 14 sailors were taken to the port of Cartagena, while two more are missing.
At the same time, the publication’s sources claim that there was an explosion on the ship, which caused it to roll.
The Ursa Major has for many years transported cargo for the so-called “Syrian Express,” a supply route for Russian troops in Syria. Analysts have suggested that it was intended to evacuate Russian bases in Tartus and Hmeimim, Syria.
At the same time, OSINT analyst Oliver Alexander notes that the dry cargo ship was heading to Vladivostok, not to help evacuate Tartus.
“Given the cargo it was carrying, it’s actually even worse for Russia than if it had been headed to Tartus,” the analyst notes.
It is known that the ship was carrying two Liebherr 420 mobile cranes for the port in Vladivostok, which is heavily loaded due to a lack of cranes, and two 45-ton hatches for the construction of a new nuclear icebreaker of Project 10510, their loss will significantly delay this process.
