Russian shadow tankers stranded off China’s coast

U.S. sanctions against Moscow’s shadow fleet are keeping three Russian tankers with more than 2 million barrels of oil off the coast of eastern China, Andrii Yermak, head of the Ukrainian presidential administration, wrote on Telegram on Jan. 13.

“All tankers that helped circumvent sanctions should be multiplied by 0,” he said, posting a photo of a coastal map with three dots marking the stranded tankers.

On Jan. 10, the United States imposed sanctions on Russia’s largest oil companies. The sanctions list includes more than 30 Russian oil service companies, as well as 184 “shadow fleet” tankers, logistics facilities, and third-party companies. The sanctions are expected to cause Moscow to lose billions of dollars in revenue each month.

“These are the most significant sanctions to date on Russia’s energy sector, by far the largest source of revenue for [Russian dictator Vladimir] Putin’s war,” the Biden administration official said.

They were implemented to “strike at every stage of Russian oil production and distribution.”

On. Jan. 7, Shandong Port Group banned tankers under U.S. sanctions from entering its ports in the eastern Chinese province of Shandong. It is one of China’s largest port operators that manages ports in Shandong province where significant volumes of sanctioned oil from Russia, Iran, and Venezuela are imported.
