Russian hackers suspected of cyberattack on American Colonial Pipeline

The hacker group DarkSide is responsible for the cyberattack that paralyzed the operation of the pipeline of the American company Colonial Pipeline. This was reported by Associated Press.

According to CNN, citing a former senior US administration cybersecurity official, the suspected hackers may have come from Russia.

The cyberattack against Colonial Pipeline, which supplies fuel to 45% of the US East Coast population, occurred on May 7. A ransomware virus has infiltrated her computer system. At the same time, hackers stole about 100 gigabytes of data, writes Bloomberg. The operation of the pipeline has not yet been restored.

American media sources familiar with the investigation into the incident said that the DarkSide hacker group has been extorting money since August 2020. She does not arrange cyberattacks in the post-Soviet space. Also, hackers from DarkSide claim that they do not attack hospitals and educational institutions, and donate part of the proceeds from cyberattacks to charity.

Due to the cyberattack, an interdepartmental commission has been created in the White House, which deals with the issue of preventing interruptions in the supply of fuel in the country.

  1. It will be interesting to see Biden’s reaction to this crime. Whether he applies penalties to Russia or if the media cover for him in case he doesn’t or possible Hunter pick up some work in Moskovia.

    • What’s more worrying, what sort of security are these US companies using. Windows 95 and a free download of AVG?

      • The scary part about it is the experts say they went in through a “customer” portal which just gets info about customers. But the experts said if they can do that they can also likely go in through an operational portal and control the operations. As in, change pressures, overloads, redirections and blockages. In other words, they could blow up Atlanta or Philadelphia if they wanted to.

  2. How many more times will we read this sort of news before those in charge will finally wake up?
