Russian gas era in Europe ends: Gazprom stops transit via Ukraine

The cuts came a day before the agreement was due to expire.

As early as January 1, 2025, the transit of Russian gas to Europe via Ukraine will be stopped. This was reported by Reuters , citing information from the Russian gas monopoly.

The publication notes that the long era of Moscow’s dominance in the European gas market is thus ending. The reduction has already taken place a day before the expiration of the agreement.

“Data from the Ukrainian gas transportation operator showed on Tuesday that Russia had not sent any requests for gas supplies for January 1,” the report said.

The media recalls that the European Union has sharply reduced its dependence on Russian gas since the outbreak of a full-scale war in Ukraine in February 2022, seeking alternative sources of gas:

“Slovakia and Austria have agreed on alternative supplies, and analysts predict a minimal impact of the stoppage (of transit – UNIAN) on the market.”

At the same time, according to the authors, stopping transit will have significant geopolitical significance.

“Moscow has lost its dominant share of gas supplies to the European Union to rivals such as the United States, Qatar and Norway. … For Europe, the loss of cheap Russian gas has led to a significant economic downturn, a surge in inflation and an increase in the cost of living. Although Europe has quickly found alternative energy sources, the loss of Russian gas has exacerbated long-term concerns about its global competitiveness and, in particular, Germany’s industrial future,” the article says.

Termination of Russian gas transit through Ukraine

Recently, Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico complained to EU leaders about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for stopping the transit of Russian gas. According to him, Kyiv was offered other options for gas transit, in addition to Russian, but Zelensky rejected these proposals as well.

As Fico said, this decision is unilateral, since the European Commission in its letter of December this year “unequivocally” stated that the conclusion of contracts for the supply or transit of Russian gas is not prohibited by EU law.

  1. Gazprom did not stop the transit of russian gas, Ukraine stopped it. I have seen various articles claiming that russia stopped the transit, making it appear this was a russian decision.

  2. Wasn’t this when the actual Contract came to an end?

I seem to remember years ago when the war began we all said how unfair it was that UA continued to honour the Contract when the moskali were invading?

Now the lying shitfucks are claiming it is their decision!

I suppose even those lying scum couldn’t get anyone to believe it was Ukraine doing it out of spite due to the war.
