President Volodymyr Zelenskyy assured that Russia will not be able to implement its plan to recapture Ukrainian territories, although the Kremlin wants to exchange a pause in the war and killings for the legalization of the occupation of Ukraine.

The head of state said this in an evening video address on August 9. According to him, Ukraine and all partners equally perceive the need for a ceasefire, but the second attempt to divide our country will be stopped.

The President informed that since the morning of August 9, active diplomatic coordination with partners, in particular, Great Britain, France, Finland, Estonia, Denmark, and Spain, has been ongoing. He thanked everyone for their clear support.

Zelensky stressed that the end of the war must be fair, and it depends on Russia, it is Russia that must end the war it started.

Zelensky stressed the need for real and lasting peace, not a pause

“Ukraine and all partners equally perceive the need for a ceasefire, a cessation of killings. Only one subject opposes this – Putin. His only card in his hand is the ability to kill, and he is trying to sell the cessation of deaths as dearly as possible. It is important that this does not deceive anyone. What is needed is not a pause in killings, but a real, lasting peace,” the president said.

He also assured that a ceasefire is needed, not “sometime later,” not in months, but immediately.

“President Trump told me so, and I absolutely support it,” the president added.

Trump has the leverage to end the war

“I have not yet heard that any of the partners doubted America’s ability to prevent war. The President of the United States has leverage, has determination,” Zelensky emphasized.

The Head of State recalled that Ukraine has supported all of Trump’s proposals since February. Among them: all ceasefire formats, meetings with the Russian side, which were held constructively, prisoner exchanges have taken place and further ones are being prepared.

“There is already more understanding regarding the lists. We are counting on the result,” he added.

Putin is afraid of sanctions, but Ukraine will not allow the division of its country

Zelensky once again emphasized the need for a worthy result at the leadership level in order to save people’s lives, so that the world appreciates the result and is grateful to the leader who will bring it.

At the same time, according to him, contacts with the American side continue at various levels almost around the clock , but not everything is announced publicly.

” Everyone sees Putin’s tactics clearly. He is afraid of sanctions and is doing everything to escape them. He wants to exchange a pause in the war, in the killings, for the legalization of the occupation of our land – he wants to get territorial spoils for the second time. He was allowed to take Crimea, and this led to the occupation of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. He did not receive preventive punishment when he gathered a contingent on our borders. This led to a full-scale war and the occupation of more parts of Ukraine. Now Putin wants to be forgiven for seizing the south of our Kherson region, Zaporizhia, the entire territory of Luhansk, Donetsk regions, and Crimea. We will not allow this second attempt to divide Ukraine by Russia. Knowing Russia, where there is a second, there is a third. Therefore, we stand firmly, on clear Ukrainian positions,” the president emphasized.

In addition, Zelenskyy stated that the war with Russia must be ended with a dignified peace based on a clear, reliable security architecture. Ukraine’s partners are ready to help in this.

“I thank all our people who supported us today, who are fighting for our state, who are working for Ukraine. I thank every soldier, every citizen of Ukraine, who realizes that independence is based on dignity. Fear and concessions do not make the lives of nations safe. Russian desires to dispose of Ukrainian territories will remain desires as long as Ukrainians stand shoulder to shoulder, help the army, help the state,” the Ukrainian leader said.

Zelenskyy on the negotiations between security representatives

The President said that on the evening of August 9, a Ukrainian team from the United Kingdom, including the head of the Presidential Office, Andriy Yermak, reported to him.

” There were negotiations between security representatives of the United States of America and Europe: Ukraine, the United States – Vice President Vance, – Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, Poland. The meeting was constructive. Everyone conveyed our signals. Our arguments are heard. The dangers are taken into account. The path to peace for Ukraine must be determined together and only together with Ukraine, this is of principle. And it is important that common approaches, a common vision work for real peace. A consolidated position. A ceasefire. An end to the occupation. An end to the war. Thank you to everyone who is with us, who is with Ukraine!” – the head of state emphasized.

As OBOZ.UA reported, French President Emmanuel Macron stated on August 9 that Ukrainians have been fighting for their freedom and security for over three years. Therefore, the future of Ukraine as a state cannot be decided without Ukrainians.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump  hinted at a scenario for resolving the war  that would be put forward at a meeting in Alaska. The scenario could involve  a territorial exchange between Kyiv and Moscow.
