Gasoline is not sold at all at Novorossiysk gas stations, and limited amounts of diesel fuel are available at only eight gas stations.

Novorossiysk is facing a critical shortage of automotive fuel, the latest in a fuel crisis spreading across Russia amid continued Ukrainian attacks on key oil refineries, Bloomberg reports.

“Currently, gasoline is not sold at gas stations. Limited amounts of diesel fuel are available at eight gas stations,” the Novorossiysk administration said in a statement.

Only companies that have fuel supply contracts with certain gas station networks can refuel vehicles for official needs in Novorossiysk. The head of the Krasnodar Territory, which includes Novorossiysk, Veniamin Kondratyev, urged residents to consider switching to methane-powered vehicles.

“Along with electric cars, this is a worthy alternative to cars with gasoline and diesel engines,” the governor said.

Novorossiysk is home to Russia’s largest oil terminal on the Black Sea, through which an average of over 980,000 barrels of Russian oil were shipped daily last month.

Novorossiysk’s oil infrastructure has repeatedly been the target of Ukrainian drone attacks as Kyiv seeks to cut into Moscow’s oil revenues, which help finance the war against Ukraine.

Kyiv has been striking Russian refineries almost daily, causing oil refining and fuel production to plummet. In recent days, about 90% of Russian regions have faced problems with gasoline supplies or various forms of fuel rationing.

Russia has already imposed a ban on the export of most gasoline and jet fuel, and the government is also considering restricting foreign supplies of diesel fuel.
