A number of countries said that “they would be embarrassed” if Russia took part in the event.

Russia will not be invited to the 80th anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy due to Western “concerns” about Moscow’s presence.

In April, French publications wrote that Russia (but not Vladimir Putin) would be invited to the 80th anniversary of the landing of the Allied forces “in recognition of the sacrifice of the Soviet people and their contribution to the victory of 1945.” However, Reuters interlocutors have now stated that now none of the Russian officials will be invited.

“If there is a person, there is a problem. If there is no person, there is no problem,” one of the sources said, quoting Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, as Reuters writes.

Three other EU diplomats told Reuters that a number of countries said “they would be embarrassed” if Russia attended the event.

“The Russian delegation will not be present. The conditions are not being met, given the aggressive war that Russia is waging against Ukraine and which has intensified even more in recent weeks,” the French president clarified.

The ceremony to mark the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings this year will be attended by US President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. French President Emmanuel Macron said he intended during this meeting “to put it very clearly to announce that we are going to do more to support Ukraine .”
