The Russian Chess Federation was too enamored with the annexation of Ukrainian clubs.

The Russian Chess Federation has been deprived of membership in the International Chess Federation (FIDE) for two years. The decision was made based on the complaint of the Chess Federation of Ukraine .

As follows from the published text of the decision , the Russian Chess Federation was punished for “active activity” in the occupied territories of Ukraine. Earlier, the Russian Chess Federation officially included the chess clubs of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, as well as Crimea.

Ukraine’s complaint also stated that the Russian Chess Federation is associated with individuals who are under international sanctions due to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation.

The Russian TV channel “Match-TV” reports that the president of FIDE – the Russian Arkady Dvorkovich – also got it. He was reprimanded for his participation in the board of trustees of the Russian Chess Federation.

“It is well known that Mr. Dvorkovich has been closely associated with President Putin for many years, a fact which he does not deny,” the decision of the FIDE Ethics Commission states.

They do not want to see Russians at sports competitions

As UNIAN wrote, Russian and Belarusian tennis players were still admitted to the Olympics in Paris. The decision states that they should be selected on general terms and meet the requirements of neutrality – to speak under a neutral flag and not support aggression against Ukraine.

However, the mayor of Paris spoke out against Russia and Belarus at the 2024 Olympics. The mayor said that Russian and Belarusian athletes will not be welcome in Paris. And the Ukrainians, on the contrary, will be supported.
