Russia failed to win enough votes to be re-elected to the governing board of the UN Aviation Agency, the International Civil Aviation Organization.

It is reported by Reuters .

During the ICAO assembly on Saturday, Russia fell short of the 86 votes needed to remain on the organization’s governing board.

The Russian representative noted that the Russian Federation considers this as a purely political step and has nothing to do with Russia’s position in the field of civil aviation.

Russia ranked as one of the “major powers in air transport” among the 36 members on the ICAO Council.

According to the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine, Russia was not re-elected in the first two rounds of elections to the ICAO Council – the main governing body of this organization. The final round of voting will take place on Tuesday, October 4th.

“Such a collective decision of 170 ICAO member countries is a response to a full-scale invasion of Ukraine,” the Ministry ‘s Telegram channel notes.

Russia in ICAO

The International Civil Aviation Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations that organizes and coordinates international cooperation between states in all aspects of civil aviation activities. Founded in 1944.

Recall that in March, Russia allowed the country’s airlines to enter aircraft leased from foreign companies into the aircraft register. Therefore, the West accuses Russia of illegally confiscating hundreds of foreign aircraft.

It was also previously reported that the International Civil Aviation Organization and the European Aviation Safety Agency suspended the validity of certificates and permits issued to Russian air operators.

  1. Russia should not remain a member of any international agency/group. It should be expelled from the UN.
