Russian demographers and experts from the local Academy of Sciences are proposing to lower the marriage age to 14. This, they believe, would help “overcome the demographic crisis.” But ordinary Russians have met the idea with criticism and ridicule.
According to monitoring data from the public organization Join Ukraine, the main lobbyist for this idea was Yuriy Krupnov, head of the Institute of Demography, Migration and Regional Development. During a specialized discussion on the issue of fertility, he publicly spoke out in favor of a gradual lowering of the marriage age.
Demographers loyal to the Kremlin and some “RAS experts” immediately rushed to defend his position. They began to assure that in southern Russia, teenagers mature much faster physiologically, and therefore are ready to have children and start families while still in school.
However, it was not possible to appease Russian society. Analysts calculated that angry and condemnatory reactions under the publications outweighed positive ones – a ratio of 15 to 1. Residents of the Russian Federation massively write that the state is “returning to the Middle Ages” with leaps and bounds, the proposal itself is reminiscent of the practices of Afghanistan and the Taliban movement. Residents of the occupying country even ironically said that “pregnant schoolgirls” will now attend classes.
Interestingly, even natives of the North Caucasus were quick to distance themselves from the absurd innovation. They emphasized that even in conservative and deeply traditional regions, people do not approve of such early unions.
“Even users who usually support the actions of the authorities or demonstrate loyalty to state policy reacted sharply negatively to this idea,” said Andriy Sukharina, a leading analyst of the Russian branch of Join Ukraine.
Analysts also noted the emergence of anti-migrant and anti-Caucasian comments, in which users linked the proposal to stereotypes about the traditions of individual regions.
