Russia uses African Corps in its offensive on Vovchansk – UK intelligence

UK Defence Intelligence has said that Russia is stepping up its war against Ukraine with resources previously earmarked for Africa, including the African Corps, which includes former Wagnerites.

Details: The review indicates that over the past week, Russia has deployed units of the Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) African Corps alongside regular Russian troops and Storm Z units during the offensive on Vovchansk.

“The Russian MOD’s Africa Corps, which emerged in December 2023, consists of more than 2,000 regular soldiers and officers, as well as experienced mercenaries, many of whom previously served in the Wagner Group. Africa Corps detachments have highly likely previously deployed to Syria, Libya, Burkina Faso and Niger,” the review says.

Russia’s MoD almost certainly redeployed African Corps units to the Ukrainian border during April 2024 in preparation for this offensive. UK intelligence said it is highly likely that Russia is reinforcing its war against Ukraine with resources previously earmarked for Africa.

  1. This tells me that the orcs are losing men quicker than they can replace them. All this BS coming out about a ceasefire on current lines would never see light of day if Putler was confident of rolling over Ukraine. I think Putler ordered one massive push to grab what he could, then freeze the war before the aid started to flood in.

  2. Right, F1, this is a sign of desperation. Putting one of the last experienced units of professional soldiers into the meat grinder, in a “hail mary pass” attempt at strengthening the offensive, won’t do Russia much good. This accelerates the decline of the quality of the Russian army and only makes sense if territorial gains have to be achieved until a deadline, at any cost. But why should there be any need for hurry for the invaders now? Only if the attrition rate is too high and there’s an urgent need to end the war in a short run. So, this may be an indication that Putin is really ready for a negotiated peace now, in which he hopes to achieve territorial concessions by Ukraine. The purge of his own army command may be intended to showcase the generals as scapegoats for totally missing the stated goal of the whole “3 day special operation”. See Weimar Germany’s “Dolchstosslegende” (‘back stabbing myth’) as a historical precedent. The next weeks will show if this interpretation is true. If Putin comes to the negotiation table, he’ll soon find that he miscalculated, though. Ukraine won’t accept any victory of the murderous dictator, no matter how small!
