The aggressor country Russia continues to suffer heavy losses of personnel during its offensive operations in Ukraine. Moreover, the occupiers’ advances along the front line have slowed down over the past four months, but the losses of personnel are comparable to the level suffered by Russian troops during the period of intensive offensives from September to December 2024.
The level of losses of Russian troops consistently increased throughout September, October, November, and December 2024, and reached a peak of 49,135 total monthly losses in December 2024. This is stated in the analysis of the Institute for the Study of War.
The monthly pace of Russian troop advances stalled at 839 square kilometers in November 2024, began to slow in December 2024 to 593 square kilometers, and continued to slow in 2025. Analysts note that Russian advances were 45% slower in the period from January to April 2025 than in the period from September to December 2024, although Russian losses decreased by only 10% during this period. Thus, the Russian military command is putting up with similar rates of personnel losses, despite a significant decrease in the pace of territorial gains.
The occupiers have so far sustained these losses and the current pace of offensive operations by rapidly deploying low-skilled troops to the front lines, although reliance on such troops also hampers Russia’s ability to conduct complex operations and advance rapidly. ISW has not observed a noticeable slowdown in the pace of Russian offensive operations along the front line in recent months, despite the slowdown in the pace of advance, suggesting that Russia is generating enough forces to sustain these losses without reducing the priority of any area of the front.
Analysts also reported that new Russian recruits receive only a month of training before being sent to Ukraine, and this limited training likely limits the occupiers’ combat capabilities and the overall ability of the Russian military to successfully conduct complex operations.
Recall that Ukrainian soldiers reduced the number of the Russian occupation army by 1,170 invaders in a day on May 2. Russia’s total combat losses in manpower exceeded 955,000 inhabitants.
Earlier, the Armed Forces of Ukraine showed a video of a successful strike , as a result of which eight enemy guns were destroyed in the Lyman direction. Also on May 1, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrsky, said that Ukrainian soldiers had restored 115 positions in April.

“ISW has not observed a noticeable slowdown in the pace of Russian offensive operations along the front line in recent months, despite the slowdown in the pace of advance, suggesting that Russia is generating enough forces to sustain these losses without reducing the priority of any area of the front.”
This is truly a meat grinder for the mafia army. The AFU is too happy to grind the meat on a continuous basis. With such primitive tactics, there is nothing to fear from this ragtag gang of creatures in what used to be an army. They are a mere collection of zombies pumped full of drugs and alcohol to numb the thoughts that the next assault will turn their bodies into food for hungry animals.
What is a big problem are the incessant attacks by their drones on cities every damned day and night. Here, Ukraine and its partners must find an answer.
Zombies with WW2 helmets…lol…
