A sharp spike in Russian troop losses has coincided with Moscow’s offensive on the town of Avdiivka, according to Ukraine’s latest figures.
Russian forces have reportedly suffered high casualties and large equipment losses during their push for the town in the eastern Donetsk oblast that they launched at the start of October.
The number of Russian troops that Kyiv says has been “liquidated” has gradually increased from between 300 and 600 a day since early July to between 600 and 1,000 soldiers since early October. Since July, the lowest-recorded daily total was 320 on September 26 and while, on August 8, there was a high of 820. Most daily losses were in the region of 600. Newsweek could not as yet independently verify the figures. Estimates of casualty numbers vary, given the changing nature of the conflict.
However, in its update on Saturday, Ukraine said that Russia had faced losses of 830. This took the total over the course of the war that started on February 24, 2022 to 304,100. The grim milestone of 300,000 was reached earlier this week.
Ukraine’s tally of Russian losses of both troops and equipment is higher than other estimates. At the end of October, British defense officials said that Russia had lost between 150,000 and 190,000 personnel. This comprised those either killed or permanently injured, although it did not include soldiers from the Wagner Group of mercenaries. The U.K. Ministry of Defence said that the push for Avdiivka was behind the rise in losses.
Meanwhile, figures from the investigation outlet Mediazona, in collaboration with the BBC News Russian service, which draws on publicly accessible sources, have calculated that, as of Saturday, 35,780 Russian soldiers have been killed.
It said on November 3, that the actual number of deaths is likely much higher and it had previously estimated that, by the end of May 2023, Vladimir Putin‘s invasion of Ukraine had killed 47,000 Russians below the age of 50. Again, Newsweek could not as yet independently verify the figures.
In its update released Friday, Mediazona said that 900 names of Russian dead had been added to the list. Obituaries came in from losses in the battle for Avdiivka, a Ukrainian strike at a ship in Sevastopol and those killed from the ATACMS strikes on the Berdyansk and Luhansk airports on October 17.
Mediazona added that most of those killed in action come from the Russian regions, namely Sverdlovsk, Bashkiria, Chelyabinsk and Buryatia.
Russian troops have made confirmed gains on Avdiivka, according to the U.S.-based independent think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW). It said that geolocated footage published on Friday showed Moscow’s advances 2½ miles north of the city.
The Ukrainian General Staff said its troops had repelled more than 17 Russian assaults north, west and southwest of the town.

Many more of these dirty creatures must be killed. It’s as simple as that.
Putler won’t care. He wants to enslave Ukraine at all cost. Only ruSSian rebels can bring this fuck up downe!
Everyone and their dogs know that putler doesn’t care. It doesn’t change the fact that more dead roaches is good news.
In his now notorious interview with The Economist, (subsequently copied, edited, disseminated and given different spins by different sites), Gen. Zaluzhnyi himself stated:
“Gen Zaluzhny initially believed he could halt Russia “by bleeding its troops”. He added: “That was my mistake. Russia has lost at least 150,000 dead. In any other country such casualties would have stopped the war.”
So the General estimates half of the “official” figures. Unfortunately, these things matter when you are dealing with a foul horde of savages with four times your personnel resources.
Before it’s too late, Ukraine needs to mobilise again internally and aggressively externally with its vast diaspora.
Probably that won’t be enough, so the allies should fund the provision of 100,000 mercs.
We learned about Colombian volunteers, well that’s a resource that should be tapped.
I suggested before hiring Peshmerga troops; very good fighters and anti-putler.
Ukraine must eliminate four times as many as their own losses, just to maintain parity. The winning formula would be 8-1 in Ukraine’s favour, requiring far more long range fires, far more of all cluster variants, far more attack drones and much more modern artillery and ammo.
Unfortunately we saw the true feelings of even an ally: Meloni, when spoofed by putinaZi fucktards. It was a shameful episode, because her opinion is probably rife throughout the EU.
The Scandies, Holland, Poland, Czechia the UK and the Balts (in their case heroically) are pulling their weight. The Germans after a slow start, began to deliver, but still won’t send long range fires.
The contribution of the following is piss poor:
France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Switzerland.
Serbia, Orbanistan, Austria and Slovakia are with the BRICS filth.
But Ukraine’s most terrible enemy outside RuZZia is the Trumputler alliance in Congress and The Senate.
The first thing to die in any war is the truth.
We must take a large pinch of salt over what Gen. Zaluzhny said, even the figure 150,000 for dead roaches. Just about everything he said should be carefully scrutinized. Of course, his words will not help in the moral department, both for the soldiers and the civilians. But, as I said, I think it’s a ruse, and the expected result is worth making such a bold move. Why would Zelensky not make him suffer any consequences for this interview, as he’s publicly saying the opposite; that there is no stalemate? I think that this is an official game plan that has something to do with pushing the enemy towards a certain direction, to make them do something that’ll favor Ukraine. Letting the enemy think that you’re weaker than you are often makes him feel overconfident and animates him to take foolish steps.
If Zaluzhny gets punished in any way over this interview, then forget my whole idea about this.
In the end, we know very little about the truth of his statements. I’m not saying that things are going as planned. But, increasing the losses in orc meat and material IS a viable concept, as long as your own losses are kept to a minimum.
I must mention that I was always an advocate to not even attacking the orc defensive lines after it proved to be so strong. Ukraine would’ve done better invading mafia land in the northern part of the front and coming around to their backs. Maybe the West was against this strategy. I don’t know. I wouldn’t be at all surprised. But, now we are where we are and Zalzhny has said what he said. He knows the ruskie mentality better than any of us, especially their military doctrines. We’ll see what will happen next.
Of course, there’s a LOT that we could still do to help Ukraine, even without entering the fight directly. I don’t believe that it’s our industrial capacity that’s hampering us as much as our political will. And, it’s not only the willpower that’s sorely lacking amongst the marshmallows, it’s also their limited imagination. Democracy is a great thing, but it is a real stumbling block in times like these. We see how dictatorships – mafia land, iran and north korea – work together more effectively and quicker than the democracies.
