Russia is continuing their war against Ukraine full steam ahead, even though it’s become increasingly clear that the nation cannot sustain its cost or casualty toll. But as Russia hits over a million casualties, and even Vladimir Putin has to admit that the Russian economy is struggling, Putin is also doubling down on the war effort, making no signs of being interested in peace talks, and doubling down on his objectives. Why?

In short, it’s becoming increasingly clear that for Vladimir Putin, defeat is simply not an option. He will force Russia to sustain whatever amount of casualties and costs the Russian people are willing to bear, because for him, the implications of the war are potentially a loss of his own power and his own life.
