Russia is so desperate for ammunition that North Korea can gouge Moscow while supplying roughly two in every five Russian artillery rounds, even though about half of those shells require factory repairs before use. North Korean deliveries have already fallen by more than half, Russia’s main maritime supply fleet has been cut in half, and Ukrainian intelligence has struck the railway carrying those weapons west.

That dependence is costing Moscow far more than cash, with Pyongyang earning up to $12 billion while gaining battlefield experience, missile knowledge, and Russian technology it could not easily obtain elsewhere. North Korea is getting years of military development while Russia gets ammunition it needs immediately. Iran has made a similar trade, providing Shahed technology while receiving Russian munitions, TNT, and missile expertise in return.

China is squeezing Russia on an even larger scale, with prices on controlled Chinese exports to Russia rising nearly 90% while Beijing buys Russian oil at steep discounts. China has also offered about $50 for gas that costs Russia roughly $125 per 1,000 cubic meters to produce. Moscow turned east because Western sanctions left it fewer options, and its remaining suppliers now know Russia cannot easily walk away.
