Russia signed the Convention on the Protection of National Minorities in 1996.

On August 1, Russia officially withdrew from the Framework Convention of the Council of Europe on the Protection of National Minorities. This is stated on the official legal portal of the Russian Federation .

It is noted that the convention, which was signed in February 1995, establishes key principles for the treatment of national minorities in Europe, namely the prohibition of their discrimination and forced assimilation, the freedom to practice one’s religion and to speak their native language freely.

According to Russian mass media, in October 2023, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin signed a law denouncing the convention. The reason for this was indicated that in 2022, Russia “lost the opportunity to participate in the development of decisions on issues of interest to it” and monitor violations of the rights of the “Russian-speaking population abroad.”

The latest news of the Russian Federation

As UNIAN wrote, on August 13, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the Chargé d’Affaires of the Moldovan Embassy in Moscow due to reports that Moldova allegedly wants to deploy F-16 aircraft for Ukraine on its territory. However, the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied such information and stated that the Russian agency receives data from fake sources.

The Economist also reported that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin spends a lot of money , as a result of which the country’s economy is not falling, but growing. Russian GDP is expected to grow by more than 3% in real terms this year.

“Consumer sentiment, according to Russian statistics agency estimates, is well above the average since Vladimir Putin came to power in 2000. … Russians’ confidence in their own financial situation has recently jumped to an all-time high, according to official data. They are more prone to big purchases, such as a car or sofa, and restaurants are full,” the article noted.
