Syria stated that old agreements on military bases had been suspended and no new ones had been signed.

Russia has failed to reach an agreement with Syria regarding the fate of its military bases. Syria announced that it had suspended the agreements signed by the regimes of Russian and Syrian dictators Vladimir Putin and Bashar al-Assad. The new Syrian government is ready to sign new agreements with Russia, but, it has stated, only on a mutually beneficial basis. This was reported by the Militarnye portal .

It is noted that negotiations between Syria and Russia to revise existing agreements are ongoing. These agreements govern bilateral cooperation, including military presence. According to Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Hassan al-Shaybani, no new agreements have been reached.

“Syria’s relations with Russia have been gradual and no new agreements have been signed,” the Syrian Arab News Agency quotes the minister as saying .

The agreements were discussed during Syrian President al-Shara’a’s visit to Moscow, where he met with Putin. They discussed the fate of Bashar al-Assad, who is in hiding in Russia. They also discussed future relations and prospects for cooperation.

Journalists report that the two sides have failed to resolve their differences, primarily those concerning Russian military bases in Syria. Russian troops operate in Syria under an agreement with Assad signed in 2017. The agreement was intended to last for 49 years. However, according to the Syrian Foreign Minister, the agreements reached by the previous regime have been suspended: they “no longer meet the interests of the Syrian people.” He added that no new agreements have been reached.

He emphasized that in the diplomatic sphere, the new Syrian authorities will act with due respect for the country’s rights and will not make concessions. According to him, Syria is using its international status to strengthen ties with Russia, China, and Europe. He added that the new government is restoring relations with China, which supported the previous regime. Next month, Syrian officials will make their first official visit to Beijing.
